Calling Bullshit on Body Language!
Some myths can limit our success.
Body language can play a key role in our careers from interviews to building professional relationships. Even being perceived as having leadership skills. But not everything you’ve heard is true.
Here I am at a workshop I ran. My arms are crossed.
What does it tell you about me? Nothing.
If you were to believe crossed arms always means resistance you would think I was standing there with an attitude. I was one of gratitude by the way for the people who showed up to share that space with me.
Of course, crossed arms often does indicate resistance but it can mean other things or nothing at all depending on the individual and in context. If a person sits in a chair with no armrests, it increases the chance of crossed arms as does a low room temperature.
If someone is deep in thought crossing arms is a common way to increase concentration. As was the case in my photo. I was actively listening to the powerful conversations in our group before responding.
The problem with believing the crossed arm myth is that we may not realize it is coming from a different place and perspective.
And our unique humanness.
Be different it challenges assumptions!
